New Delhi News, 17 Jan 2020 : At Dastkar, we are starting the year with bringing together two core groups dedicated to creativity – Craftspeople and Designers. Every year, the Design Fair celebrates an interesting and endearing confluence of design practices meeting traditional arts and crafts. The bazaar focuses on the sustenance and development of traditional Indian crafts.

Laila Taiyabji, Chairperson, Dastkar Society says “One of the exciting things happening in the last few years, is the emergence of young designers and entrepreneurs working with crafts and craftspeople. The Dastkar DESIGN FAIR celebrates and showcases them, as well as many craftspeople who have the inspiration and resolve to move from being merely skilled hands to being designers themselves. The journey is not easy.”

A group of over 70 craft and natural product entrepreneurs are selected to exhibit at the event on the basis of their design, contemporization and development of traditional craft practices, as well as their contribution towards upskilling craftspeople. This tasteful selection ranges from products across lifestyle & accessories, home decor, organics, bric-à-brac and other collectibles, textiles and readymade garments.

Visitors can find a range of their favorite crafts adorning designer goods like the art of Shibori interpreting various concepts and storylines, ceramic and pottery wonders infused with cane, bamboo, glass and rope for your homes, Rekha Kapoor’s collection of block and hand painted Kalamkari, Madhubani painted garments, Hand painted terracotta jewelry and home decor, a contemporary rendition of Pichwai painting by artist Kuldeepak Soni, Thathera craft, and some of your favorite textile crafts like Pashmina, Banarasi, Chikankari and Ari and Zardozi embroideries.

Meiraa will be Introducing Chikankari founded by Vidhi Agarwal and she aims to create unique, innovative and sustainable designs that keep the traditional craft forms alive. Discovering Roots is a trust that works in Jammu and Kashmir, India.They have taken the first step towards reviving the lost tradition of handcrafting pashmina shawls in a small town of the state. Discovering Roots has created a “women empowerment hub” that provides women a platform to showcase their skills and eventually earn a living. They practice fair-trade that directly helps Khadi-Pashmina is a concept created by Discovering Roots. They use traditional tools and techniques for hand-weaving khadi to make our pashmina that is eco-friendly and sustainable. Khadi-Pashmina is the “purest” form of pashmina found nowhere in the world. A brand committed exclusively to propagate Awadhi embroidery Lavangg is also participating in Design Fair. They specialize in Chikankari, Zardozi, Mukesh and Arri. Their product range features clutches, sling bags, cushion covers, potlis, goggle cases, tea-coasters, organizers, file folders and tapestry.Lavangg aims at helping artisans by giving them regular employment and other added facilities.Furthermore, the organisation helps in increasing the livelihood of women in villages by teaching them how to build handicrafts and getting paid for the same.The Shibori Designer-Pallav Chaudhary began his creative journey as a Textile Artist and has widespread knowledge in the areas of dyeing, shibori, surface ornamentation and printing techniques, his main interest in textiles focuses on a mix of uniquely developed dyeing and surface techniques.The artist has created artworks inspired by Origami Folds of Bhang Leaf, Darwin’s Orchid and Four Leaf Clover these evolutionary plants changed the world in spiritual, scientific and mythological ways. For the new season, the artist has added a second series to bhang leaf artwork which delineates a leaf advancing into a snake. The artist uses Shibori (Resist Dyeing) on fabric as its medium to express himself.

There are over 30 textile designers and new designers like Jasveen Sabharwal, she is a studio potter from Delhi, who makes kitchenware, planters, diffusers bottles & tabletop accessories in stoneware ceramics and unglazed terracotta and Kuldeep Soni is a Pichwai Miniature artist from Rajasthan, who gives a contemporary twist to his paintings and has participated in over 15 solo shows till now.

For all our visitors to maintain their cultural roots, we have organised a traditional Manganiyar performance from Rajasthan that will liven up the venue across the weekends.
